Everything You Need To Know About Installing Or Repairing A Seawall
April 20, 2022

Many new clients think that seawalls have to look like a physical wall structure, but as the equipment and materials advanced, so did the seawall design. It is a structure that provides a defence barrier that protects your property from the shoreline.

Anywhere Barges ‒ our barge hire company catering to Sydney and surrounds ‒ has experts specialising in the building and upkeep of seawalls. Here’s what you need to know about installing and repairing them.

Types Of Seawalls

There are two types of seawalls: The riprap embankment and vertical walls.

1) Riprap Embankments

A riprap is mainly used in areas with a constant flow of water but no big waves. They are less expensive than vertical walls as they are not made from the same material and take less time to install. The side of your property exposed to the sea gets covered with rocks, stones, sandbags, or even concrete leftover from precious paving jobs.

2) Vertical Walls

A vertical wall is an upright structure installed right at the ocean bed, protecting your property against the more giant waves and allowing you to use your property entirely.

How Do Seawalls Work?

Seawalls redirect the waves that crash into your property back to the ocean, eliminating the water's force. This, in return, reduces the erosion and protects you, your property and any other inhabitants.

Is It Necessary To Install A Seawall On My Property?

If you have property near a shoreline, installing a seawall sooner rather than later is best. In areas with low impact from the ocean and flood-prone areas, your belongings are at risk if the strength of the water suddenly changes. Seawalls are also proven to work for areas where there are heavy force waves, storms and hurricanes as they have been tested and can withstand the force.

Seawalls Can Be Installed To Stop Rain/Storm Damage

Many people don't realise that seawalls don't necessarily have to be used near the ocean or rivers; it is also the perfect solution to stop the force coming from the land itself. Every time it rains, all the groundwater above the waterline needs a place to equalise. If it doesn't have space to flow, there can be a massive build-up of water which can cause significant damage. It is always best to do proper preventative steps instead of avoiding the problem.
